Sapphormation: A two-day festival in Manchester for women who love women | LGBT youth north west

Sapphormation Festival is back this November (1st and 2nd) with two days of free workshops, films, discussions and art for all and any women who love women.

This year’s theme is ‘breaking the mould’ and there are more than 30 activities taking place over Saturday 1 November and Sunday 2 November. Examples of what will be on offer include: workshops on why lesbian, bisexual and trans* women of colour invisible in the LGBT community and wider society; an opportunity to learn stone-masonry skills; a workshop on sexual pleasure, and a panel discussion on why women who love women are often portrayed as ‘mad, bad or dangerous’ in the media. The majority of the Sapphormation Festival takes place at the The Joyce Layland LGBT Centre in the heart of Manchester, and its Sidney Street Cafe will be serving vegan food and winter warmer mocktails all weekend. On Saturday evening the focus moves to Bangkok Bar for Rapture Club Night, and then on Sunday, Sapphormation switches to sports, for a fun afternoon of taster sessions for fencing, softball, basketball and tchoukball. “The purpose of Sapphormation is to create a fun, inspiring and welcoming place for lesbian and bisexual women,” says Myrtle Finley from The Empowerment People, who are organising Sapphormation. “The gay scene is still male-dominated, ‘body beautiful’, anti-intellectual and commercially driven. We wanted to create a space for women to connect with their community, share ideas, learn from one another and make new friends. This weekend will be a welcoming and eclectic space to try out new things and explore key issues and ideas relevant to women today.” Sapphormation takes place on November 1st and 2nd 2014. It is free, and open to all women who love women (including trans women who identify as women who love women). All ages are welcome, and children are welcome to the entertainment events in the day provided they are supervised by a responsible adult. Sapphormation
