Alicya Eyo | The Proud Trust

Alicya Eyo is currently playing Ruby Haswell in ITV’s Emmerdale.  With a long-standing acting career under her belt, this lovable Liverpudlian is now supporting a North West charity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans young people.

Alicya says: “I’m totally honoured to have this association with LGBT Youth North West.  Coming from the North West myself, being a lesbian, I’m thrilled to see organisations such as this.  LGBT Youth North West is doing, and has been doing, some incredible work with our young people which I think is vital in terms of developing confidence, identity and a sense of place in this crazy world! I’m looking forward to meeting everyone involved and doing as much as I can to support them.”

More about Alicya:

Alicya’s got an extensive career in television, film and theatre that dates back to the late 1990s, before becoming instantly recognizable as Denny Blood, the fierce, troublesome but absolutely loveable inmate from Britain’s most infamous prison – HMP Larkhall – in ITV’s women prison drama Bad Girls, where Alicya was locked up for an impressive five series, before leaving at the end of the 2003 series.

In 1997, Alicya made television appearances on Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Casualty.Alicya went on to star in an uncredited roll in the film B.U.S.T.E.D. which also started Goldie and the talented David Bowie, and also went on to star in a movie called G:MT – Greenwich Mean Time.

But Alicya’s big break as Denny Blood came when she was offered the part of Denny Blood in 1998. According to Alicya, the agent told her Bad Girls’ makers were looking for a ‘shit, young, black, skinhead, tattoos with piercing’. Alicya was neither a shit skinhead or heavily tattooed and pierced, but won the part. Alicya was heavily stenciled for the part, and showed off Denny’s tattoos with pride.

Alicya’s portrayal won the hearts of millions – at it’s peak, Bad Girls was drawing in more than nine million viewers – and this was reflected in the Bad Girls Most Wanted spin-off, where viewers could vote for their favourite inmate: the character of Denny Blood came in sixth.

During her time in Bad Girls, she also appeared in the movie The Low Down, in an episode of Urban Gothic, and Tube Tales. Since leaving Bad Girls, she’s appeared on Holby City twice, as two separate characters, and the BBC daytime drama Doctors. She plays Gaynor Harvey in new Shed Productions drama Bombshell. However, Bombshell still has not been aired in the UK; but has made its screening debut down under in Australia and New Zealand. Alicya has also gone on to appear in The Bill, Casualty and Holby City – as well as a critically acclaimed performance in the theatre in play Any Which Way. 2009 saw Alicya play Jean Fellowes during an episode of the new BBC One drama Paradox.

Since then, Alicya’s also had a stint with Bad Girls’ sister show, Waterloo Road during 2011, before being signed up for a major role in Britain’s famous northern soap, Emmerdale. Alicya appears in the Dales from October 2011 as Ruby Haswell.
