LGBT Awareness for Young People | The Proud Trust

We deliver awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) issues to young people in schools and youth club settings. We can tailor our activities to suit your needs, from assemblies catering to the masses, to in depth training for small groups of young people.

In the financial year 2014 – 2015 we delivered LGBT Awareness workshops to in excess of 9000 young people in secondary schools across the region.

Our most popular workshops include:

Challenging Stereotypes – recommended for school years 7-8, this workshop explores and dispels some of the common myths surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans identities. The workshop also encourages young people to rethink using the word “gay” to mean “rubbish”, “bad”, etc, etc. Furthermore young people will begin to consider what might be an appropriate response when the time comes when a friend “comes out” to them.

Challenging Homophobia – recommended for school years 9 – 11, this fully interactive discussion based workshop explores young people’s attitudes to different sexualities. Furthermore, the workshop challenges homophobic language and behaviours often displayed by young people and outlines the negative impact of homophobia on young lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people. The young people that we work with are keen to help us deliver this by sharing their personal stories.

Trans Awareness – tailored to the age of the audience, this workshop introduces young people to gender related issues and dispels the myths surrounding trans identities. A complex and little-discussed topic, this training help understand the issues commonly faced by our trans community. The trans young people we work with have helped us develop this workshop and where possible are always keen to come and help deliver these workshops by candidly sharing real life experiences.
